Bellyfit

Through classes and experiences like Bellyfit®, women the world over are waking up to the natural beauty and power that is within them and creating ways in which to express, cultivate and share this wisdom, all with the goal of healing our planet. We believe that if a woman is not finding time on a regular basis to move her body, breathe deeply, sweat and connect to the energy that animates her physical being, ie: be inspired, then she simply cannot be in her full power. Bellyfit is about bringing women back to their true selves, back to their power so they can step up to the challenges that lie ahead and guide our planet back to peace and balance. It all begins in the body.

Bellyfit Philosophy:

Bellyfit was developed as a fitness system, exclusively for women, that incorporates the body, mind, and spirit with dance.  All the moves and exercises are designed to make women feel powerful, graceful, beautiful, strong, and sexy ~ while simultaneously empowering them to deal with the many stresses and demands in their modern lives. Very aware of the loud messages in our media to look and be a certain way, especially aimed at women and girls, The Founder and CEO of Bellyfit, Alice Bracegirdle, decided to counter this negative programming by weaving positive messaging into Bellyfit classes.  She states, “(We) fuse these ideas of positive body image, loving your body, (and) doing exercise because you love your body and want to care for it, not because you hate it and want to change it”.  And that message is getting out there, women are heeding the call to come together and celebrate just being themselves, and Bellyfit is taking off.

“Someone described Bellyfit as being in the middle of Zumba and yoga, and I thought ‘You know what, that’s great. If you want to put me in between Zumba and yoga I’m happy to be there,”

What is Bellyfit:

Bellyfit is a Fusion Fitness experience exclusively for women. It blends the power and wisdom of ancient cultures, with the research, technology and trends of the modern world. It is designed to connect you to the deep, primal feminine within, while helping you find strength to deal with modern day stress.  Each class is a seamless fusion of movements inspired by the science of Western fitness, the style and beauty of Cultural Dance and the power of spiritual practices & philosophies from the East. Expect to burn calories, relieve stress and get the sweat flowing with fun, easy to learn cardio moves infused with the ancient and beautiful fundamentals of Belly Dance, Bollywood, Bhangra, African Dance and more. Enjoy sculpting, toning and tightening with Pilates inspired core work, a deep yet relaxing Yoga inspired stretch and mindful Mudra Meditation. Be inspired and motivated by high energy electronic beats, fused with culturally rich ethno-organic sounds and melodies, and experience an hour that inspires the body, the mind, the spirit and the heart to reach beyond limitations and into pure transformation.  Participants range from girls in their late teens to women in their 60s.

Interesting factoid:  The first Bellyfit class was called “Ab-Fab Fitness” and was taught by Alice in January of 2003, in Perth, Ontario.

History of Bellyfit:

Read here

“As with most successful ventures, Bellyfit was created out of a personal need that turned out to be the need of many.  In early 2003, Bellyfit Founder and CEO Alice Bracegirdle found herself at a personal low.  After having traveled the world, run a successful vegan hemp seed food company on Vancouver Island (before hemp and vegan were buzzwords), explored electronic music, raving and the art of DJing, certified as an aerobics instructor and shimmied her heart out as a professional Belly Dancer, she found herself back in her hometown of Perth, Ontario – a single mother on welfare.  Realizing that the health of her 2 year old daughter Shalom and of herself were suffering due to stress and depression, she knew she had to make a change.  She recognized the need for a workout experience that balanced body, mind, spirit, heart AND empowered her to be a strong, balanced woman. Further inspired by her vision of a future in which all girls were educated about healthy body image, and women in general were empowered in their natural bodies, Alice conceived of Bellyfit – a fusion of Cultural Dance, fitness, body philosophy, and deeply motivational and inspirational ethno-electronica. Since then the demand for Bellyfit has increased exponentially and Alice has been joined by a team of highly skilled choreographers, fitness professionals, musical visionaries and business experts.  The system is now expanding to include many more forms of movement and will continue to evolve for years to come.”  Source:  Bellyfit.ca

Bellyfit Live is when a Bellyfit instructor teams up with a DJ and/or a live drummer(s) to offer a “live”, extra long Bellyfit class.  The energy created by the live mixing of tracks and live drumming adds an incredible energy to both the instructor and the participants, creating an experience that goes beyond a workout and into the realm of community celebration and unity!
